Welcome to our government affairs section, where you can participate in online surveys and campaigns, read letters we've sent to politicians — as well as their responses — and learn more about what CAA's doing to get action on transportation-related issues that affect your quality of life.
Advocacy is an important part of our auto club's mandate — whether it's consulting with government officials, helping members get in touch with their elected representatives or raising awareness of important issues in the media.
In fact, CAA South Central Ontario's impressive history of promoting road safety, personal mobility and fair legislation for motorists has played a key role in growing our membership to more than one million from 27 in 1903.
Our first act of advocacy was organizing a demonstration ride for politicians in 1903 to show that a 10 mile-per-hour speed limit was safe in urban areas. We also helped install and fund the first directional signs on Ontario's roads and pioneered a road numbering system to provide guidance to travellers.
From time-to-time, we receive letters from members asking how CAA sets policy on issues like public transit, gasoline taxes, highway funding and the environment.
CAA policy is based on research and member opinion, both of which are formulated into a policy document that's used by all CAA clubs. Members' opinions are sought each year through extensive polling, with the results added to input from CAA staff who deal with questions, suggestions and concerns raised by members.
Although CAA does not poll each of its four million members annually, we obtain what is considered by professionals to be a valid representation of the views and opinions of the majority of our members.
Our surveys show repeatedly that our members expect CAA to speak for them nationally, provincially and locally on transportation-related issues they consider important.
We know that we will rarely achieve unanimous agreement among members on most issues. But as a membership-based club, we're obligated to follow the wishes of the majority of our members and we'll continue to perform that duty to the best of our ability.
